The dramatic entrance gate to one of Kyoto's most popular Buddhist temples -- the Kiyomizu Temple - towers over a bank of blooming azaleas. Kyoto has more than 2,000 temples and shrines, which makes it one of the most popular tourist destinations in Japan.

The Kiyomizu Temple is on a hill overlooking Kyoto, and is one of the city's most famous landmarks. It was first built in the eight century, but most of the current buildings have been reconstructed since the early 17th century.

Given the fame of the Kiyomizu Temple, it is unfortunately very popular with tour groups and school outings, but it is still one of Kyoto's most impressive temple complexes and well worth a visit.
