ASTRO Farewell

Great Wall

On the Great Wall of China at Simatai in 2003. I have not reduced the size of this picture to enable you to view it full size and appreciate the scale and splendour of the Great Wall. Have a look at how far the wall extends over the mountain tops - literally as far as the eye can see. The file size of this picture is 820Kb so it may take a minute or two to load depending on the speed of your connection. Wait until the small size picture has fully loaded, then click on it to see the full size picture in a new window. You will also be able to see the detail of the wall which in this part of China is not reconstructed like at Badaling near Beijing. This is the original wall and most of the sides are missing on this section. This makes it too dangerous to allow tour groups on (because they will fall off the sides) so visiting the wall at Simitai is a much 'quieter' experience - but you have to watch where you are walking!

Meeting Royalty

Wishing the King of Nepal a happy birthday at the Narayanhiti Palace in Kathmandu on 7 July 2004. His Majesty King Gyanendra was celebrating his 58th birthday.

Almaty Opera House

With a Japanese colleague and two pretty girls at the Almaty Opera House in Kazakhstan (2004). Both these girls have fabulous voices and had just 'starred' in a concert that also featured the famous Kazakh violinist, Marat Bisengaliev, to whom I was advised they are related.

Ballooning over Thailand

Hot air ballooning over Chiang Mai, Thailand, in December 2004 - a great way to enjoy the scenery. In case you are wondering how this picture was taken, the pilot put his digital camera on a timer and swung it out from the balloon on a rope. Very clever!

Cycling in China

On a bike near Yangshuo in September 2005. This is a great way to see the spectacular limestone karst scenery in this part of China.

Singing Girls

Dream Dates

Okay, I know these pretty Vietnamese girls are too young for me . . . but a guy can still dream ;) Vietnamese girls look so elegant in their traditional dresses (ao dai) and I am always fascinated to watch them riding their bicycles around town with their long white ao dai always looking so crisp and clean. This was taken in November 2005 at the Temple of Literature in Hanoi.

Out of Africa

September 2006: Preparing to take off just after dawn in an ultra-light from a dirt airstrip in Zimbabwe to take some photographs of Victoria Falls. Flying over Africa in one of these machines is something that I have always wanted to do. It was a great experience.

World Peace Centre

Meeting the President of the World Peace Centre, Dr Vishwanath D. Karad, in Pune, India in February 2007. Dr Karad is a remarkable man – a physicist, philosopher, visionary and educationalist whose organisation promotes a culture of peace through a union of science and spirituality, and a value-based universal education system.
